Description
Bactigras is a type of wound dressing used for the prevention of infection in a variety of minor skin injuries and wounds. It is composed of a cotton leno-weave fabric impregnated with white soft paraffin and 0.5% w/w Chlorhexidine Acetate BP, an antimicrobial agent.
Here’s a closer look at Bactigras:
Key features and benefits
- Antimicrobial Action: Chlorhexidine, the active ingredient, is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, helping to prevent and fight off infections. It is inactive against fungi, spores, and viruses.
- Promotes Healing: The dressing facilitates a clean and moist wound environment, aiding in the healing process.
- Protective Barrier: It forms a protective layer against bacteria and other contaminants, minimizing the risk of infection.
- Low-Adherent: The soft paraffin base helps prevent the dressing from sticking to the wound, reducing pain and discomfort during changes.
- Easy Application: The fine-mesh structure and conformable material allow for easy application and removal.
- Versatile: It is used for various wound types such as minor burns, cuts, grazes, abrasions, ulcers, and surgical incisions.
Important considerations
- Not Waterproof: Bactigras is not waterproof and requires an additional covering if waterproof protection is needed.
- Not for Deep or Severe Wounds: While suitable for many types of wounds, deep wounds or burns may require specialized treatment, and consulting a doctor for appropriate assessment and care is recommended.
- Allergies: Individuals with known allergies to Chlorhexidine should avoid using Bactigras.
- Dosage & Interactions: It should not be used with oxidizing wound cleaning agents, soap, or iodine-based solutions.
- Storage & Disposal: Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight. Do not resterilize unused dressings.
How to use
- Cleanse the wound and surrounding skin with a sterile solution (e.g., normal saline).
- Gently dry the skin surrounding the wound.
- Peel open the foil sachet containing the dressing.
- Cut the dressing to the desired size, if necessary.
- Carefully remove the protective paper backing.
- Apply the dressing directly to the wound, ensuring it covers the entire affected area.
- Secure the dressing in place with an adhesive tape or bandage.
- Change the dressing as directed by a healthcare professional, or more often if the wound is heavily exuding or the dressing becomes soiled.
